ASICS has been keeping two new shoes very hush hush. Even meeting with them last year at The Running Event where brands are playing up all the new things, nada. Not a word! Then last week on my doorstep were two brand new models for the Blast line up of shoes: Megablast and Sonicblast.Many brands are going to this silo approach of having a family of shoes. Great in some ways and very confusing in others, so here is a quick breakdown of the line:

ASICS Novablast 5: Daily trainer with good amount of cushion, not made to pick up the pace
ASICS Superblast 2: Lightweight, great cushioned trainer that can pick up the pace and carry many through their marathon feeling really stable
ASICS Sonicblast: Pebax plated uptempo shoe with more bounce and speed, but can still function on easy days.
ASICS Megablast: Lightest shoe in the line up, using bouncy foam from their top tier shoes
One level up from all this would be the ASICS Metaspeed Sky and Edge as front of the pack race day shoes
Reviews of the Sonicblast and Megablast are in the works, but they shoes won’t be released until Sept 1 so we mostly wanted to give you a heads up and sneak peak as you start to hear about it all over social media.
The entire blast line up was ASICS raising their hand to say “hey runners, we’re back and we’re different. We’re not just the gel shoes you’ve known forever.” These two brand new shoes are absolutely extending that discussion.
For those waiting on updates to the existing shoes, we’re looking at March 2026 for the Superblast 3 and July 2026 for the Novablast 6. That gives these two new shoes some time for everyone to understand what they are and see how they fit in to a running shoe rotation.
Sonicblast Specifications
A large contingent of runners have been asking ASICS for a superblast with a plate and this is their answer. Instead of just inserting a plate, they came up with a different foam and put in that PEBAX plate to make it more widely accessible and usable than the carbon plated race day shoes.

Megablast Specifications
All right, so then what’s the goal of the Megablast? It’s not plated. It’s not just a max cushion super soft shoe. It’s energetic, it’s bouncy, it’s the closest thing I’ve found to the much loved Adidas EVO SL.

New Foam Is a Difference Maker
One thing these shoes both share is using their newest foam, the FF Turbo Squared.
New now often means they are taking an existing foam and doing some remixing. It’s a fascinating technical process that I won’t bore you with, but results in some big gains for these shoes.
What we’ll all be waiting to see is this means the FFBlast we’ve come to expect in the Nova and Superblast will be updated as well. It does have a softer feeling, but people are obsesses with bounce and weight…so who knows.
Of course, the question on my mind was will this new super foam be as durable. ASICS said in their testing it meets all the normal durability standards, which sounds a little like a politician answering without answering. As noted, we are testing these right now and will have some thoughts.
