Just three weeks after Kingston, Ont., sprinter Wyatt Lee etched his name into the Canadian record books, he’s done it again. At the OFSAA East Regional qualifiers on May 30, Lee broke his own national U18 100m record to punch his ticket to the provincial championships.
The 17-year-old stopped the clock at 10.42 seconds (+0.9 m/s), lowering the 10.44 mark he set earlier this month by two one-hundredths of a second. He also broke the OFSAA East Regional meet record of 10.47 seconds, held by Segun Makinde since 2009.
This is Lee’s third U18 Canadian record of the 2025 season, adding to his previous marks over 100m and 60m (indoors). His latest time also ranks among the top three U18 100m performances in the world this year.
Lee’s rise in sprinting has been nothing short of extraordinary. In May 2024, he ran the 100m for the first time at a high school meet in 11.51 seconds. Just one year later, he has shaved more than a second off his personal best—a significant improvement in an event known for its small margins.
When Lee broke Aaron Brown’s long-standing U18 record earlier this month, the Olympic gold medallist gave him a shoutout in an interview with CBC Sports. “You know, shout out to him. Records are meant to be broken,” Brown said. “I’m happy to see it.”
Brown added with a laugh that his record had come on a bigger stage—when he clocked 10.46 to win silver at the 2009 World Youth Championships in Italy.
Lee will look to make headlines again at the 2025 OFSAA Championships in Toronto this weekend, where he’s set to compete in both the senior boys’ 100m and 200m.
