Heysen Trail Ultra: Iconic Trail Running Event
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Trail running is more than a sport, it’s a journey, a community, and for many, a life-changing experience. Few events embody this better than the Heysen Trail Ultra.

After 14 incredible years of history, adventures, and the forging of lifelong friendships, this iconic event has embraced its next evolution with a fresh new name, new distance option, and a new logo. This race isn’t just one of the oldest ultra marathons in South Australia, it’s part of the very fabric of SA’s trail running scene. From its humble beginnings, it has grown and evolved, while remaining true to its core: adventure, camaraderie, trails, and stunning rolling country.

Inman Vally, trail near Mount Compass

A Distance for Everyone: Whether you’re a seasoned ultrarunner or just starting your trail running journey, this race has multiple distances throughout the two day event. From the accessible 13k to the formidable 115k, these single-day options offer something to inspire and challenge runners of all levels.   For those craving more, the two-day events include the ultimate endurance feats: the Double to a Tonne (100k) and the Double to a Miler (100 miles). Generous cut-off times mean you can run, jog, or hike your way to the finish- everyone’s welcome here.

The Power of Community: What makes the Heysen Trail Ultra truly special though, is its people. Last year saw the largest event and volunteer team ever. The feedback from runners was overwhelming, and this year, even more exciting improvements are rolling out in response. It’s clear that this event is built on a foundation of mutual respect and support.

The numbers speak for themselves with entries up by over 50% compared to the same time last year. That surge in enthusiasm is a testament to how deeply this event resonates with the trail running community.

King’s Beach near the Bluff

Bucket List Worthy: The Heysen Trail Ultra has become a bucket-list event for runners across Australia. Each year, a strong contingent of interstate runners makes the trek to Victor Harbor to experience the magic, to be part of the entire experience, from the stunning scenery to the warm camaraderie of the trail running tribe.

Every kilometre is packed with unforgettable moments: the sun rising over the trail, the glow of aid stations in the middle of the night, and the exhilaration of finally crossing the finish line.

Heart and Soul on the Trail: Ask any participant what makes the Heysen Trail Ultra special, and you’ll hear stories of resilience, connection, and joy. These incredible moments include the emotional high of seeing the lights of Inman in the distance, knowing their buddy runners were waiting to guide them to the finish, or the magic of running alongside the ocean, the sound of waves crashing as they pushed through exhaustion.

Others speak of the incredible volunteers, the “angels” who keep the event running smoothly, offering encouragement, snacks, and smiles at every aid station. And then there’s the sense of belonging, the thrill of being surrounded by people who don’t think running 50k is crazy, who understand the pull of the trails and the need to challenge body and mind.

A New Chapter, Same Heart: As the Heysen Trail Ultra moves forward with a new name and fresh energy, one thing remains unchanged: the heart of the event. It’s still about the people, the trails, and the unforgettable experiences that make this ultra so much more than just a race.

Whether you’re chasing a PB, conquering a new distance, or simply soaking in the scenery, the Heysen Trail Ultra welcomes you with open arms.
