Two weeks ago, 17 Canadian collegiate athletes punched their tickets to the 2025 NCAA Track and Field Championships, which kick off Wednesday in Eugene, Ore. A record-setting 11 Canadian women qualified, joined by six men competing across five different events.

Leading the charge is Savannah Sutherland of Borden, Sask., a standout for the University of Michigan. The 2023 NCAA 400m hurdles champion enters as the clear favourite to reclaim her title after finishing second last year to the University of Southern California’s Jasmine Jones.

Sutherland, a double Canadian record holder in the 400m hurdles and indoor 400m, is fresh off her third consecutive Big Ten title (won in Eugene last month) and will double up in the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay at this year’s national competition.

Canada’s top two medal threats on the men’s side lie in the 800m, with the University of Oregon’s Matti Erickson and Mississippi State University’s Abdullahi Hassan entering as serious gold-medal contenders.

The pair of 22-year-olds went one-two in the 800m at the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this year. Erickson, from Nelson, B.C., has run under 1:47 three times this season, while Hassan, of Scarborough, Ont., qualified with an impressive 1:45.64.

Erickson now looks to complete a rare indoor-outdoor double, while Hassan aims for his first NCAA crown.
