Calgary Marathon heats up the city with record turnout

The 61st Servus Calgary Marathon turned the city into a celebration of sweat, spirit and community pride. Over two sun-filled days, a record 17,280 participants—from diaper dashers to elite marathoners—hit the pavement while thousands cheered them on. It was the biggest turnout in the event’s history, surpassing the previous record of 14,750 set during the marathon’s 50th anniversary in 2014.

“We anticipated there would be significant growth in 2025, which is why we moved the 5K and 10K to Saturday and kept the marathon and half on Sunday,” said Kirsten Fleming, executive director of Run Calgary. “We couldn’t have taken this important step without the full cooperation of The City of Calgary, The Calgary Stampede, and our sponsors, especially Servus Credit Union.”

With over 6,000 people tackling their very first race, Fleming says the weekend reflects Calgary’s growing passion for active living: “Run Calgary is thrilled to help support that.” More than 1,800 volunteers helped make it all run smoothly, and the course was buzzing with Olympians, community run crews, families and walkers alike.

Marathon champions

Lethbridge’s Kip Kangogo took the win in the men’s marathon, finishing in 2:28:42. He was followed by Jakub Sumbera of Invermere, B.C., in 2:32:14. Matthew Neumann of Canmore, B.C. rounded out the podium in 2:3:13.

In the women’s race, Kelly Challinor of Kelowna, B.C. crossed the line in 2:52:05 to claim first; Cassandra De Winter of Lethbridge, Alta., took second in 2:52:54, and Airdrie, Alta.’s Dawn Neal ran to third in 2:53:45.

Community impact

Beyond the races, the event had a significant charitable impact, raising $800,000 for 109 charities through the Servus Charity Challenge. This contribution brings the 11-year fundraising total to nearly $11 million.

“The Run Calgary team is incredibly proud of each and every finisher—from our tiniest Diaper Dasher to our final marathon finisher,” said Fleming, post-event. “We are inspired by the grit and grace of participants who left it all out there this weekend.”
