After not being the biggest fans of the previous model, we crossed our fingers that the Brooks Ghost Max 3 would change our minds. The colors and design are slightly different, but does that mean they’ll feel different too? When I opened the Brooks Ghost Max 3 box, I was surprised that they looked like the Glycerin Max. But I didn’t want to get too excited because we know that the Brooks Ghosts have a firmer cushion.
This shoe is obviously a fan favorite since it’s onto the third model, but we’re skeptical if the updates will make us swoon over the shoe.
Let’s dive into what updates were made and find out if it will make it into the rotation.
Wide Feet: Plenty of space, and it even comes in other widths.
Heavier Runners: Perfect pick because it’s a durable shoe with a stable ride.
Long Runs:Â Will keep your feet comfortable for many miles.
Front of the Pack: Not the best choice for picking up the pace.

Brooks Ghost Max 3 Overview
There’s no hiding it, the Brooks Ghost Max 3 is a chunky shoe.
It may not be everyone’s bread and butter, but if you liked the Ghost Max 2, you’re not going to be disappointed with the updates.
After a few runs and walks in the Brooks Ghost Max 3, I was pleasantly surprised at how different it felt underfoot.
There’s still DNA Loft V3 cushion in the midsole, but it feels a little softer this go around. Now, by no means does softer mean like a pillowy or a marshmallowy New Balance 1080, just that it’s not going to feel like a rock like the Ghost Max 2 did.
While this is not a stability shoe, it’s going to offer a naturally stable ride with moderate cushioning, making it a good choice for runners who already love the fit and feel of a Brooks shoe.
This is going to be a shoe that we keep on our list of best shoes for heavier runners! It’s going to be great if you follow run/walk intervals.
The overall design of the Brooks Ghost Max 3 is eye-catching. The brand focused on the details of this shoe, from the colors to the way the logo is carved in the tongue.
In the past, we called this shoe geriatric-looking, but I don’t think that applies here!
Brooks Ghost Max 3 Specifications
Quick Take
A wider base with moderate cushioning for all day comfort.
Soft, plush upper mesh that’s still breathable and keeps your foot in place.
A durable shoe that is going to last for many miles.
Isn’t a very versatile shoe; it’s not meant to throw on to run faster paces.
It’s a heavier shoe that may not be ideal for everyone.
Brooks Ghost Max 3 Feel
The Brooks Ghost Max 3 is plusher than the previous model, especially in the mid and forefoot.
To be sure, I put on the Max 3 and Max 2 at the same time to truly compare if there was a difference. The Ghost Max 3 added more foam in the forefoot to have a smoother heel-to-toe roll or transition.
Each stride felt more natural, and I didn’t have to work as much to move myself forward while running or walking.

This shoe feels similar to the Saucony Hurricane 25, with a wider base and a more structured fit. The design is going to be good for runners who tend to overpronate (foot rolls inward).
I may grab these if I plan to walk a lot or anticipate being on my feet for many hours. But it’s not a shoe I’ll wear on the treadmill because they feel too chunky indoors. If you’re like me and want to feel more of the ground underfoot, check out the Brooks Ghost 17.
And if you’re looking for a max cushioned shoe with a super plush feel, that’s going to be one of my personal favorites, the Brooks Glycerin Max.
Brooks Ghost Max 3 Fit
The fit of the Brooks Ghost Max 3 was just right. There was no break-in period needed, they felt great from the very first run.
Brooks running shoes tend to offer a few widths so that there’s an option for everyone. I wore an 11 regular in these, and they were perfect.
With the updated mesh material, the shoes felt airy and not super stiff. There was enough room in the toebox for my toes to move around, especially when they were swollen after a longer run.
In comparison to the Brooks Ghost Max 2, I didn’t feel like my feet were being swallowed by the shoes. Two loops were added to the tongue to help it stay in place while you’re walking or running. These also helped avoid any bunching when tying the shoes tightly.
The laces are longer but not too long that you have to worry about tripping. If you’re someone who likes to do lock lacing, you’re all set!A big update that I was excited to see is that there’s less cushioning in the heel collar and tongue! This makes the Brooks Ghost Max 3 fit more comfortably, and you’re not going to have to stress about any irritation or the types of socks that you’re wearing.
Brooks Ghost 17 vs Brooks Ghost Max 3
If you’re basing it on how these shoes feel underfoot, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I would pick the Ghost Max 3.
The Max still feels a little more cushioned and comfortable when I put a shoe on both feet and bop around for a bit. You’re going to get more stack height and overall shoe, but they both weigh the same so it’s ultimately going to come down to the fit.

We really like the updates that Brooks made to the upper and sole. But it’s still a pretty chunky shoe that we’re not sure everyone is going to be on board with.
