On Tuesday morning, one of the world’s fastest female marathoners was handed a 22-month ban by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for whereabouts violations. Ethiopia’s Tadu Teshome, a 2:17 marathoner, missed three out-of-competition drug tests within a 12-month period—an automatic anti-doping rule violation under World Athletics regulations.

The AIU has banned Tadu Teshome Nare (Ethiopia) for 22 months from 5 February 2025 for Whereabouts Failures.DQ results from 13 October 2024

According to the AIU, Teshome’s three missed tests occurred between Nov. 7, 2023, and Oct. 13, 2024. Two of the three failures were reportedly due to her representative not updating her location in ADAMS (the Anti-Doping Administration & Management System). Athletes are required to maintain accurate and current whereabouts in ADAMS so they can be subject to random testing—an essential component of global anti-doping efforts.

Teshome was ranked 16th in the world in the World Athletics women’s marathon rankings last year. She has multiple top-10 finishes at Abbott World Marathon Majors over the past three seasons and ran a personal best of 2:17:36 at the 2022 Valencia Marathon, where she placed fourth.

The 23-year-old’s career highlight remains a victory at the 2021 Barcelona Marathon. She currently ranks 11th on Ethiopia’s all-time women’s marathon list.

Teshome will be ineligible to compete until December 2026. All results from Oct. 13, 2024, onward will be disqualified.
